Fishries Department

There are 250 staff serving under the Fisheries department

The main function of Fisheries department, Government of Balochistan is to develop the socio-economic condition of fisher folks by maximizing their earning. The department extended help to fishermen by supplying outboard and inboard engines, fishing equipments, spare parts, nylon nets on a subside rates. Boat repair facilities were also provided to the fishermen in addition to potable drinking water to save hem from water borne diseases. To facilitate proper place of landing and to increase scope of marketing for the catch, fish harbours, Jetties and ancillary facilities have been introduced in Gawadar, Pasni and Gaddani areas.

Fish processing plants mostly concentrated near Karachi Port. The catch from Balochistan Coastal water looses freshness before reacting these plants due to hostile ambient temperatures and inadequate post-harvest handling and care.

The Fisheries in Balochistan

The Fisheries Sector of Balochistan Province comprises two broad classifications according to its discrete biochemical mechanisms governed by the environmental factors on living conditions of its marine and inland fisheries.

INLAND FISHERIES

Against modest river line prospects, Balochistan is endowed with abundance of streams, springs delay action dams, Karezes (under ground tunnels for perennial low of water), tube wells, internal drainage system, forming large brackish water lakes in chaghi and Kharan, and flash floods that form a considerable number of  permanent pools (suitable for year to year aquaculture).

The canal rich district of Nasirabad offers as good prospects for fish culture as any other inland fish area of Pakistan.

For aquaculture, climatically three different regions are available in Balochistan:

 i) Warm region:  Kharan, Nasirabad, Sibi, Awaran, Chaghi, Bela, Kachi, Dera Bugti Khohlu, Turbat, and Gwadar districts are suitable for the aquaculture of major carp, Chinese carp and common carp.

ii)  Semi cold region:  Khuzdar, Barkan, Loralai, Pishin, Panjgur, Quetta, Killa Abdullah, Killa Saifullah, Zhob, Mastung and some areas of Sibi district are suitable for common carp and also for Chinese carp with slow growth rate. Mahaseer culture is also suitable in some stony areas of the above semi warm regions

iii) Cold region: Kalat, Ziarat, Hanna Urrak, Toba Kakari etc are suitable for trout culture.

MARINE FISHERIES

Pakistan is a maritime country, which is blessed with potential fishery resources in continental shelf water. The total coastal length of Pakistan is about 1100 km, including 770 km of Balochistan coastal line, with a virgin stock of fishery resources in natural bays. The principal means of livelihood of Balochistan coastal population is fishing.

Balochistan coastal line is divided into small units depending on the type of fishing activities. These units include Gaddani, Damb, Ormara, Kalmat, Pasni, Sur Bander, Gwadur, Pishukan, and Jiwani,
