Widespread rains, snowfall likely in Balochsitan, NWFP, Kashmir Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Saturday forecast widespread rain and snowfall over hills in Balochistan, NWFP and Kashmir during next 48 hours. Scattered thunderstorm rain is also expected in upper parts of Punjab while southern parts of the province may receive isolated rain during next two days.

Director General PMD, Arif Mehmood told APP that more rain with thunderstorm is likely in Islamabad during next 48 hours.

A strong low pressure area was present over Afghanistan on Saturday and its extended trough lied over western parts of the country while a westerly weather system was affecting most parts of the country which was likely to continue during February 7-8.

He said widespread rain was recorded in different parts of NWFP and Balochistan during last 24 hours and more rain with snowfall over the hills is likely in most parts of the provinces till Monday.

In Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, scattered rain with heavy snowfall over the hills is expected during next two days.

The current weather system is intensifying gradually and it would cause widespread snowfall over the hills of Murree, Galliyat, Hazara, Malakand divisions and Kashmir.

The risk of isolated landslides along major roads including Karakorum Highway exists during the period.

However, dry weather is expected in most parts of Sindh during next 24 hours while isolated rain may occur at a few places of province from Sunday night.

Talking about rains’ impact on agriculture, the DG said the rain would prove beneficial for crops especially in Barani areas which are in dire need of water.

The present rain spell will slightly improve water level in the reservoirs and also subside foggy conditions in plain areas of Punjab.

The rainfall recorded in different cities during last 24 hours was Rawalakot 46 mm, Muzaffarbad 45, Balakot 36 mm, Abbotabad 26, Swat 24 mm, Murree 20, Dir 17 mm, Rawalpindi 11 mm, Islamabad 9 mm.

The temperature recorded in different cities was Islamabad 10°C, Lahore 9°C, Karachi 15°C, Peshawar 10°C, Quetta 5°C, Murree 1°C and the lowest minimum temperature was recorded -4°C in Kalam and Hunza.
